Beginning snowmobilers will have an opportunity to learn principles of safe snowmobile operation at an Illinois Department of Natural Resources safety education course scheduled on February 27 and March 19 from 8AM to 4PM at the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, 2200 N. Seminary Ave, Woodstock. Under Illinois law, the course is required for individuals 12 through 16 years old and those who do not possess a valid driver's license. The course is free of charge and open to the public. Registration for the course can be made by contacting Cathy Hardt at 815-334-4739.

The McHenry County Conservation District offers more than 17 miles of snowmobile trails in Glacial Park and along the Prairie Trail that connect with many other county trails. Trails are open when there is at least 4 inches of snow on the frozen ground, 6 inches on unfrozen ground. Call 815-339-6223 for trail conditions and maps. Volo Auto Museum opens its new snowmobile exhibit on Dec. 26. More than two dozen of the rarest sleds ever to soar across the snow will be featured, including a 1923 Ford Model T Snow Flyer, one of just 75 ever made. The Volo Auto Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It features roughly 400 classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars. MCRide Dial-A-Ride is a curb-to-curb, demand-response public transit service available to McHenry County residents traveling within and between partner communities. Riders call the Pace Call Center 800-451-4599 to schedule a trip the day before they need a ride or up to seven days in advance for seniors and individuals with a disability. The fare is based on distance traveled: the general public pays a base fare of $2.00 for the first five miles and $0.25 for each additional mile; and seniors and individuals with a disability pay a base fare of $1.00 for the first five miles and $0.25 for each additional mile. MCRide service hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Detailed information on how to ride can be found in the rider’s guide (link is external).
